About Us

Our club was formed in 1973 and over the years we have pursued our Lions Club International motto which is 'WE SERVE'.

The Lions Club International is the largest voluntary charitable organisation in the world and its members help not only local people and charities but also contribute to international projects.

In Aberdeen we participate in a wide range of events which are aimed at fund raising however we also have been involved in helping individual cases where hardship or tragic circumstances have been brought to our notice.

We aim to make fund raising fun and this has certainly been the case at many of our events.

Believe it or not each Boxing Day for more than the last 25 years a hardy band of dippers have braved the North Sea to raise money for various charities and they tell us its fun.

We organise race nights, quiz nights, theme nights and social nights all which are fun. We also stage outdoor events in conjunction with other organisations and these are attractive to large numbers of the public.

We have been able to supply equipment to hospitals as well as mobility aids to individuals in each case where lack of funding has created needs which we have been able to respond to.

Examples of this include equipment for the burns unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following on from the Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea. Our local fund raising was matched pound for pound by our Lions Club International Fund from our headquarters. We have supplied emergency toilet packs for people who are rushed into hospital without time to take these essentials with them.

We have given equipment for use by visually impaired children, learning packs about social skills as well as funding several individual and family support groups.

One ongoing project is the collection and recycling of used glasses which provide lenses for use in Africa where eye disease is widespread.

We have raised money from foreign coins and foreign stamp collections

Our most recent project is 'Message in a Bottle'

Members of the public who live alone and maybe have a medical condition can obtain a small green plastic bottle from most of the Boots pharmacies in Aberdeen, Inside the bottle is a form which when completed gives details about the person e.g. next of kin and prescribed medication they are taking. The bottle is placed in the fridge to prevent it being destroyed in the event of a fire. Two green stickers one for the inside of the front door and the other for on the fridge door will be obvious to members of the emergency services who may have to enter the house. They know to go to the fridge, read the form and take appropriate action. We plan to make these bottles more widely from additional pharmacies.

We are a very active club and are keen to recruit new members so that we can continue the good work which has helped so many people in the past. At times it can be hard work but it is very rewarding to see the results and share the satisfaction with the people we have helped.

If you are interested in becoming a member or maybe just coming along to one of our meetings to see and hear more about what we are doing please contact any of the members whose details are given below. We meet virtually on Zoom on the 2nd Monday of each Month and at the Sportsman's Club Queens Rd. Aberdeen on 4th Monday of the month. You can be sure of a warm welcome, We will be very glad to see you.
